Mouth Breathing vs. Nostril Breathing

  • Mouth Breathing often happens when we’re stressed, rushing, or not paying attention. It can dry out the throat, disrupt oxygen balance, and keep the nervous system on high alert. Mouth breathing tends to encourage shallow, upper-chest breaths, which can leave us feeling more anxious and fatigued.


  • Nostril Breathing, on the other hand, is nature’s design for calm, efficient breathing. The nose filters, warms, and humidifies the air, preparing it for the lungs. It also slows the breath, making it more rhythmic and supportive of the parasympathetic nervous system. Yogic practices like Nadi Shodhana (alternate nostril breathing) and Ujjayi breath emphasize nasal breathing for this very reason: it creates balance, focus, and a steady flow of prana.


When we consciously breathe through the nose during yoga, we send a message to the body: you are safe, you can soften, you can restore.


Breathing with Movement


When breath and movement are aligned, the body becomes more efficient and at ease. Muscles are nourished with oxygen. Joints are guided by rhythm. The nervous system learns balance rather than strain.
