Embracing Retrograde: A Time for Reflection, Growth, and Recalibration

Writer's picture: Heather RogersHeather Rogers

Time and time again, I hear people talking about retrograde whenever things go a little off or when challenges seem to pile up. Whether it’s technology glitches, communication breakdowns, or a general sense of confusion in the air, I can’t help but notice how retrograde is often blamed for all things "bad" happening. And while I’m not here to say that these things don’t have an impact—because they absolutely do—I do want to encourage a shift in the way we view retrograde. Instead of automatically seeing it as a period of negativity or misfortune, could we shift our mindset and view it as an opportunity for reflection and growth?

Let’s take a deeper look at what retrograde really is, why it’s often perceived negatively, and how we can embrace it as an empowering tool for personal development.

What is Retrograde?

In astrology, when a planet is said to be "retrograde," it means that the planet appears to move backward in the sky from our perspective here on Earth. It’s not actually going backward, but the optical illusion happens when a planet’s orbit crosses our own. During this time, the planet’s motion seems to slow down and reverse course, which is why retrograde can feel disorienting.

I think it’s important to pause and remember that retrograde periods are a natural part of the celestial cycles and are not inherently "bad." They simply give us a moment to pause, reflect, and reassess.

Why Do People Think Retrograde is "Bad"?

Many associate retrograde with negative events. Technology fails, travel plans go awry, and communication with others seems off. I totally get it—things feel out of sync, and it can be frustrating. But instead of automatically assuming that retrograde is the cause of everything going wrong, let’s consider the possibility that these periods are actually an invitation to slow down.

When life feels "off" during retrograde, it’s often a sign that we might be pushing ourselves too hard, trying to move forward too quickly, or avoiding some deeper introspection. Retrograde isn’t a punishment—it’s a cosmic nudge to slow down, reflect, and be more intentional about the choices we make. It’s a reminder to reconnect with ourselves, revisit our goals, and find clarity before moving forward.

Shifting Our Mindset

Instead of seeing retrograde as something to fear or resist, can we view it as an opportunity? An opportunity to hit pause, take a step back, and re-evaluate where we are in our lives. Can we view it as a cosmic reminder that sometimes we need to slow down in order to align ourselves with our true path?

I’ve experienced retrograde periods where things felt chaotic, and I initially thought, “Why is everything falling apart?” But upon reflection, I realized it wasn’t a sign of doom—it was a chance for me to reset. To clear away the clutter, revisit unresolved issues, and check in with myself to see if I was still aligned with my bigger vision. Instead of pushing ahead, retrograde invited me to step back and find the clarity I needed to move forward with more intention.

How Retrograde Can Be the Perfect Opportunity for Growth

Take Mercury retrograde, for example. People often joke about Mercury retrograde causing everything from communication breakdowns to technology meltdowns. Instead of letting these disruptions stress you out, take it as a reminder to slow down. Maybe it’s a chance to revisit old conversations that you haven’t finished or to clear up misunderstandings. Maybe it’s a moment to check in with your relationships and communication style to ensure that you’re expressing yourself clearly.

Mars retrograde, which we’re currently experiencing, is a perfect example of how retrograde periods can offer introspection on action, motivation, and desire. This time doesn’t urge us to take action blindly; rather, it invites us to reconsider the direction we want to take. It’s an opportunity to reflect on past choices, motivations, and how we engage with our goals.

During retrograde periods, instead of rushing to make decisions or initiate new projects, we’re invited to:

Reassess our goals and adjust our direction: Are you still on the path you want to be on? Or do you need to shift gears? Retrograde offers the perfect opportunity to realign your intentions and make adjustments before you move forward.

Resolve lingering issues that need closure: Retrograde is a time to tie up loose ends—whether it’s unfinished business in relationships, projects that need finalizing, or emotional baggage that needs clearing. Use this time to address and release what’s holding you back.

Reflect on your inner world: Retrograde is the perfect time for introspection. Take a step back, check in with your emotional state, and clear out anything that’s weighing you down. This could be past wounds, negative self-talk, or even limiting beliefs that are no longer serving you.

Strengthen communication and clarity: While retrograde might cause temporary confusion, it also offers an opportunity to get clear on how you communicate with others. Reflect on your communication style, listen deeply, and find ways to be more intentional in your words and actions moving forward.

A Time to Embrace the Pause

Instead of viewing retrograde as a time to avoid or dread, let’s shift our perspective. Embrace it as a chance to pause, reflect, and recalibrate. Just as the planets take their time to realign during retrograde, so too can we use these periods to reset and realign ourselves.

Retrograde is a tool for growth. It’s an invitation to slow down, reassess, and find deeper clarity. So, the next time retrograde rolls around, instead of fearing it or feeling frustrated by it, ask yourself: What is it trying to teach me? How can I use this time to realign with my true path and make more intentional decisions?

When we learn to embrace retrograde, we turn it into a powerful opportunity for reflection, growth, and transformation.
